What is Counselling?

Counselling is a professional, collaborative process that supports individuals in exploring personal challenges, gaining self-awareness, and making positive changes in their lives. Rooted in empathy, respect, and confidentiality, counselling provides a safe and non-judgmental environment where clients can openly express their thoughts, emotions, and experiences.

The core aim of counselling is to help people better understand themselves, resolve difficulties, and enhance their emotional and psychological well-being. I use a variety of approaches - principally psychodynamic and person-centred emotional - which I tailor to meet the unique needs of each client.

Effective counselling work involves active listening, empathy, ethical practice, and the ability to build strong therapeutic relationships.

In summary within our counselling work we can fully explore the problems you are facing, we can "turn the volume down" on these problem, we can find solutions that lay within you, we can make you feel better.

Counselling takes place in a safe space, where you can meet with someone who will listen with sensitivity and empathy - and without judgement. In the therapy space thoughts and feelings can be expressed freely and in confidence.

Trouble with a relationship; anxiety or panic attacks; mood swings or depression - many people face difficulties in their everyday lives that can be hard to get on top of. Counselling gives us a set of tools we can use to help gain a better understanding of what’s causing these problems - and how you can move towards managing or resolving them.

Working together I can help you gain greater insight into the difficulties you are facing, help you understand why you act or react to them the way you do, and see how you can start to make better, heathier choices moving forward.

My location

I work face to face with clients from St Albans, Harpenden, Welwyn and Hatfield, and also offer sessions online throughout the UK.

In addition to providing in-person therapy, I also offer online sessions via Zoom, making counselling accessible wherever you are.

Fees & availability

Sessions last 50 minutes, they are in the same location and at the same time every week. I work in St Albans, in Wheathampstead near Harpenden, or online via Zoom. Sessions cost £60 for which I issue monthly invoices. If preferred I can take payment for individual sessions at their completion. All payments can be by cash, card or bank transfer.

As per profession practice I charge for missed sessions, however I do allow for cancellation of individual sessions without cost with 48 hours notice.

I commence our work with a free introduction session, a simple series of questions about your life and a quick description of what brings you to counselling - ideally we finish this session knowing that you are happy to work with me, and that I believe I can help you. I know that starting counselling can be hard - I hope that making it cost free to try helps a little.

We can agree to a fixed number of sessions were we work to a known end date - or if preferred open-ended work which we can end whenever we feel ready.
